What can I say about the library?  I love it. I love that it’s changing, that the library is growing, expanding, moving forward in unexpected and challenging ways. I love that we’re embracing technology, and hiring corporate planners to create inviting spaces, and really finding ourselves as we reinvent what the library is to the public. I love that we get that opportunity.

My name is Karen and I am a married mother of three wonderfully delightful children ages 6, 2.5, and 6 months. I work in a public library in the midwest as a part-time Librarian Assistant. Really it’s my excuse to get out of the house and have a good time. Some people shop, others drink, I work at the library.  I’ve been with the library for a year and a half, but prior to that just over ten years ago I worked at the Circulation Desk of my University. Work study. I loved it, before I became overrun with allergies to the dust that is.  So ten years later I found myself stagnating at my full time job and once again drawn to the library. I decided (ok, it was really my husband) that it was time to take the bull by the horns and really get serious about getting my MLS instead of just toying with the idea. Currently I am taking my 8th and 9th courses, and hope to finish my degree next May.

Technology is not something that I find difficult to learn, but my husband is in IT, and it’s the one thing he’s brilliant at, so I have found myself falling behind in the web 2.0 world.  Together we (anonymously) run an online forum for members of our neighborhood to stay connected even while we’re at home sitting just literally blocks from one another… Strange as it seems many of these people live down the street, yet I call them by their screenname and have never met over half of our 30 members in person.  We just started the forum two months ago and are still building the site, but we went with NextBBS because it’s open source and has more web 2.0 features than most…only problem is I don’t know how to use them let alone set them all up.  Other than that I have an account on myspace, and facebook but really don’t have a clue what to do next?  I have the basics down. But I want more than basic….
